As part of the Infrastructure Security Team, I worked on projects to keep the organization running. The most important was an application to weed out old users from databases across the enterprise.

All the Meetings on Atomic Energy

The website had been created in the days pre-Perl/CGI and used a proprietary way method for generating dynamic web-pages using tags. I was tasked with changing the way the search functionality worked which meant getting down-and-dirty with the code. I added new functionality to the website’s search; which has since been retired.

Improving Document Management

Also while a grad student at UNC Chapel Hill, I worked with university staff to improve a knowledge management system. The system had two document repositories which needed synchronization.

I implemented web services using Axis for event production by one system and consumption by the other whenever a new document pertaining to coursework was added.

Results

  • Improved the document management process for a knowledge management system
  • Created web services in Java using Apache Axis to synchronize document collections across document management systems
  • Optimized caching pipeline for the content management system (based on Apache Cocoon) to serve documents 13% faster

Digitally Managing the Cultural Heritage of the South

Documenting the American South is a digital library hosted at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and during my graduate degree there, I worked for them to create a custom CMS.

Results

  • Created a CMS reducing costs by 11% per year, managing a 100+ page website, cutting time-to publication by 89% for managing the most comprehensive digital library on culture of the American south.

Learning Languages

My first internship after my first semester of programming.

Supervisor, first day: “So, you know Visual Basic?”

Me: “Ummm, no. I?ve only worked with Modula2.”

Him: “Ok, well, grab yourself a book and we’ll reimburse you for it.”

… all in German.

In any case, the code was delivered a month later on-time and to-spec.
